Marske United v Redcar Newmarket - Tuesday 18th October 2016

Marske United 5
Redcar Newmarket 0
(North Riding Senior Cup)

With only a small squad, Marske manager Carl Jarrett was only able to make a small number of changes for their 1st round North Riding Senior Cup game against Teesside League Redcar Newmarket. Dale Mulligan was injured so his place in the back four went to Lee Brockbank, with Wilf Dinsdale moving to centre back, where he finished Saturday’s disappointing defeat versus Whitley Bay. Adam Wheatley was back in the starting line-up alongside Dinsdale so Andy Ramsbottom was given a well-earned rest. At left back, Matthew Bell came back into the team allowing Dan Newby to move into midfield alongside Reece Kelly with Glen Butterworth rested and Peter Bulmer suspended. Up front, Danny Earl was also given a hard earned break so Aaron Ramsbottom partnered Jamie Owens in attack.
Marske could have taken the lead in the opening minute when Corey Nicholson set up Owens who beat 2 men but saw his shot well saved by the legs of Newmarket keeper Dale Robinson. Redcar Newmarket countered with a chance of their own but Danny Puckrin’s shot from distance was easily saved by Robert Dean. Jamie Graham was then given a lecture by referee David Holmes for a late challenge on ex-Redcar Newmarket player Brockbank. Graham then had a long range shot saved by Dean as the game calmed down after a frantic start. On 16 minutes, skipper Wheatley did superbly to block a shot from Kyran Clark. The away side were having a real go and Graham was next to test Dean but the keeper saved well. The best chance of the game so far arrived on 19 minutes when a long ball forward from Dean sent Kelly clear but a Newmarket defender did superbly to block the ball and concede a corner. Marske forced a succession of corners to no avail before a rushed clearance from Dean went straight to Michael Dowse but the striker’s sliced effort, with Dean out of his goal, didn’t hit the target. On 25 minutes, Puckrin became the first player booked when his constant chirping at the referee earned him a yellow card. Dinsdale had a shot deflected for a corner which superbly clawed away by keeper Robinson. The opening goal of the game arrived on 28 minutes in bizarre fashion when a poor near post corner from Nicholson saw Lee Jefferson’s attempted clearance slice into the net. The next sight of goal arrived when Newby was fouled by Anth Jefferson and Mulligan stepped up to take the free kick which went inches wide of Robinson’s left hand post.

Half Time: Marske 1 Redcar Newmarket 0

Marske made a change at half time, and changed formation in the process. Danny Earl replaced Reece Kelly with Marske changing to a 4-3-3 formation with Earl as the central striker with Owens on the left and Aaron Ramsbottom on the right. Two minutes into the half Dean had to be alert to save well with his feet from Clark. On 49 minutes Danny McCauley was close to turning a Brockbank cross past his own keeper but the ball went just wide for a corner. Marske made their second change just before the hour mark with Butterworth replacing goalscorer Nicholson. Mulligan had a first time volley go wide on 63 minutes before Newmarket countered moments later and Dean saved well from Dowse before Clark’s shot was blocked. Robinson then made an unorthodox save with his chest from Owens and this was the striker’s last action as Marske made their final change on 69 minutes with Andy Ramsbottom replacing him. Just a minute later it was 2-0 to Marske with Bell combining with Earl who played a lovely inside pass into the path of the onrushing Aaron Ramsbottom who passed the ball into the net from just inside the box. It was 3-0 on 74 minutes when Brockbank and Newby combined on the right for Newby to cross to Aaron Ramsbottom who played a clever chested pass into the path of Earl who saw his shot tipped away by keeper Robinson but Mulligan was on hand to score from close range. It was game over 4 minutes later as Marske scored their 3rd goal in 7 minutes when Earl pulled the ball back to Aaron Ramsbottom who scored in the corner from 15 yards. It was 5 on 80 minutes when Aaron Ramsbottom played the ball back to Butterworth, 25 yards from goal, and his first time shot flew past Robinson into the bottom corner. Earl then had a great chance to make it 6-0 from an Andy Ramsbottom cross but the shot went inches wide. Liam Jackson then made a fantastic saving tackle to prevent Aaron Ramsbottom getting a shot away as Marske progressed to the 2nd round of the North Riding Senior Cup.
Though the scoreline suggested otherwise this was a very tight game for 70 minutes with Redcar Newmarket more than matching Marske and creating a number of chances for themselves while always looking to play football. They were a credit to themselves and their league and we wish them the best of luck for the remainder of the season.
