North Shields v Marske United - Saturday 10th September 2016
North Shields 2
Marske United 2
(Northern League Division One)
Following the 3-2 away win at West Allotment Celtic, Marske manager Carl Jarrett made one change to the starting eleven with Lee Brockbank dropped to the bench which meant the John Seaton replaced him at right back with Glen Butterworth returning to the team in the centre of midfield. After his two goals against West Allotment, Aaron Ramsbottom kept his place up front with Jamie Owens on the bench.
With only 3 minutes on the clock Butterworth was warned by referee Paul Brown following a foul on Stuart Donnison and from the ensuing free kick John Parker and Dale Mulligan clashed in the box with Parker going to ground. Appeals for a penalty from the Shields fans and bench were turned down by the referee. Marske won their first corner on 5 minutes after an excellent run by Matthew Bell but Dale Mulligan headed over Butterworth’s delivery. Robert Dean was the first goalkeeper called into action when an excellent run from Jack Devlin saw him cut in from the left past Seaton and Reece Kelly but Dean saved with his legs. On 9 minutes Seaton was penalised for a foul on Dean Holmes on the edge of the box; the ensuing free kick hit the wall and the rebound went to Gary Ormston who headed over the bar. Kyle Hayes was called into action for the first time on 12 minutes when Butterworth released Bell and his left wing cross was flicked on by the head of Danny Earl into the arms of Hayes who saved with ease. On 20 minutes the tricky Devlin did well to create space and found Holmes with his pass but Dean was equal to his shot and saved well. Two minutes later, Nathan Mulligan fouled Jordan Summerly near the byline and a pinpoint delivery from Lee Mason was headed over the bar by Parker. As the game ticked past the half hour mark the home side took the lead when a loose pass from Nathan Mulligan allowed Devlin to find Holmes who timed his run well and stayed onside and slotted past Dean, who got his hand to the ball but was unable to prevent it going in. There was a moment of controversy on 37 when Parker and Earl clashed in the corner as the Shields defender ushered the ball out of play. Parker was unhappy with Earl’s challenge as the ball went out of play and shoved his head into the back of Earl’s head. However, referee Brown only had a word with each player and no further action was taken. With the game approaching half time, Marske were given a lifeline back into the game when a deep cross from John Seaton was headed towards goal and hit the hand of Adam Forster. Referee Brown had no hesitation in pointing to the penalty spot. After his miss against West Allotment, Nathan Mulligan took over spot kick duties from Earl and he sent Hayes the wrong way to draw Marske level.
Half Time: North Shields 1 Marske 1
The second half began with Nathan Mulligan’s cross being headed over by Aaron Ramsbottom. However, on 51 minutes disaster struck for Marske and yet again it was their own doing. This time it was a poor pass from Bell which allowed Mason to send Devlin clear and he kept his cool to curl a low shot past Dean to put the home side back into the lead. It was nearly 3-1 two minutes later when a cross from Donnison saw Mason’s weak looking header nearly creep in the corner but Marske were saved by the post with Dean beaten. Seaton was injured in this Shields attack and was unable to continue meaning he was replaced by Brockbank. With the hour mark approaching Nathan Mulligan tried his luck from distance but Hayes saved with ease. Butterworth then tried his luck with a first time effort but it sailed high over the bar as Marske enjoyed a spell of pressure. With 25 minutes remaining, both sides made a change with Gareth Bainbridge replacing Holmes for Shields while Owens came on in place of Aaron Ramsbottom. Bainbridge was in the action immediately shooting over the bar following a cross from Donnison. Butterworth then saw his volley deflected behind for a corner by Parker before Mason’s lob from just inside the box beat both Dean and the crossbar as Marske had a lucky escape. With the game entering the last 10 minutes Marske made their final change with Corey Nicholson replacing Andy Ramsbottom. Marske were upping the pressure and Hayes flapped at a cross from Nathan Mulligan under pressure from Nicholson which allowed Owens to pull the ball back to Butterworth who shot high over the bar. It could, and should, have been 3-1 on 84 minutes when Bainbridge easily broke the offside trap but his toe-poked effort went wide. Marske forced a succession of corners, the final one being headed over by Dale Mulligan as the referee signalled 4 minutes of injury time. Mason was booked for kicking the ball away as Shields looked to waste time. With the game entering the 4th minute of injury time Nicholson did superbly to win the ball and cross from the right hand side where Shields could only partially clear the ball to Nathan Mulligan who struck a first time shot which hit the post, rolled along the line and nestled in the opposite corner to signal great scenes of celebration from the Marske players, management and small band of supporters.
