“I didn’t think that we started well. We knew they would be fast coming at us and pressing us high so we said that we’d have to move the ball quickly. I don’t think we did that in the first half but Gotty scored a great goal and it was the perfect time to score. We gave them a chat at half time, louder than normal, and we came out second half and started much better, we looked a different team.
"Obviously, I’m not happy with the result, I hate getting beat, but I don’t think after our first half performance we deserved to win, 25 minutes of it anyway. We started sloppy and let them have all the possession and they were all over us in the first 15. Then we got the goal and had about 10-15 minutes of our own, so we were on top for a bit. I’ve just b*******d the lads there, don’t mind telling you, they cant turn up in games like that. The attitude wasn’t right after beating Shildon on Saturday, so they’ve just had a good shouting at. We’re out the cup, and I don’t mind saying it I’m p****d off.
Basically, we knew that they hadn’t won in 18 before we set off but it could have been a potential banana skin. That’s our sixth win on the bounce from the Morpeth game when we got last beat in the league. I thought we were in total control in the first half and it was one of the best displays we’ve had for a while. I thought Chay Liddle was absolutely outstanding in centre midfield and our current set up with three in the middle makes us tick.
"Thoughts on the game, it was one of those places where you come and you don’t know much about them. I was supposed to come last week and have a look at them but the game got called off they were playing. It’s been a hard couple of days for the club itself with it being arranged for the Tuesday and then getting cancelled which I was furious about. I spoke to the referee yesterday and he said the game wouldn’t be played tonight then obviously it was, so we had to come with half a squad compared to what we had last night. I’d like to say thanks to the players for putting the effort in, they all work for employers so had to get time off work to make the trip down here. What Darwen won't know when they called the game off yesterday is that some of the lads had to put holidays and sick in to come here.
“I thought tonight was much better than Saturday, we came in tonight with the right attitude after that game, we had a few words with the players on Saturday but I thought the attitude was superb tonight. I thought we dominated the game from start to finish, they couldn’t live with the way we moved the ball about quickly, they were nowhere near us really.
First of all, I thought that for 95% of the game we were the dominant team. We were the only ones that looked like we were going to win. We switched off for a five minute spell and they got in and scored, so it was disappointing from that side of things to be a goal down especially after our first half performance. The second half performance I thought we were excellent, some of the chances we had and it looked like it was going to be one of them days where nothing was going to go for us. Mikey (Roberts) had a great chance at the end where he basically missed an open goal at the back stick, Danny (Earl) got through a couple of times, but, we were excellent and showed great character to come back from a goal down. It knocked the stuffing out of us for about five minutes so to come back in and carry on and keep believing was outstanding.
"We got there eventually, what you are going to find is teams are going to come to Marske United, knowing we are a good team, they're going to stifle the game and set up in a 4-5-1 and then its going to be hard for us. I’ve said this before, there is going to be times where its going be frustrating and things aren’t going to come off, but what we have to do is just be a little bit more bright in the final third.
We were poor on Saturday, well I wouldn’t say we were poor, people have been spoilt this year because we are a decent footballing team so as soon as our standards drop you can tell. Penrith made is hard for us, it was one of them games where you had to grind it out but it’s the result that counts, its three points. I said that we’d have to play better tonight than we did Saturday to win because we know the Stockton team: there was eight lads on the pitch tonight for them that I’ve released.
Mikey Roberts is another top signing for Marske and shows how much the club are trying to move forward. Mikey has been top finisher in all the clubs he's been at and I am delighted to have him to the club. Roberts will add more fire power to a very strong squad. He's a local lad who's familiar with Marske, and knows a lot of the lads here which works well for us. I would like to thank the committee for their backing and their hard work getting him in.
Even though we won against Ryton & Crawcrook on Saturday in the Vase and went through to next round, as a group we weren't happy with our performance. We didn't move the ball like we can and it was sloppy at times. However, we are pleased to have come out the game with a win and a clean sheet and we look forward to the next phase of the competition at home to Seaham.
